Internet intermediaries, such as Facebook, Google or Twitter, guide users through the web of information and knowledge. For journalists, intermediaries have become essential as they provide access to and distribution of journalistic content.

Taking over from the power of "traditional media," these information intermediaries direct public attention and provide for public communication and civic journalism - both of which are at the core of any vibrant democracy.

How can societies around the world ensure that Internet intermediaries act in the public interest?
