Elsewhere in the Bundesliga

Alex ChafferMay 23, 2015

The Bundesliga season is over. Whilst the relegation battle ran on, the rest of the league were fighting to finish as high as possible. Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Frankfurt and Augsburg all ended with wins.

The tissues were at the ready in Dortmund, as club legends Jürgen Klopp and Sebastian Kehl said goodbye to Signal Iduna Park.

It was the perfect way to send them off, as Dortmund overcame Europa League rivals Werder Bremen to win on the last day and seal a European berth. Goals from Shinji Kagawa, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrik Mkhitaryan held off a strong Werder effort.

It was almost 1-0 in the opening five minutes. Aubameyang, however, couldn't beat the post after putting the ball past Koen Casteels. Dortmund wasn't left waiting for the opener though, Shinji Kagawa slotting past the Casteels after a quarter of an hour. Aubameyang then got his 16th goal of the season – just two minutes after the opener, he fired his shot into the bottom corner from inside the box.

Bayer Leverkusen loanee Levin Öztunali pulled a goal back for the away side, with a lovely finish across Roman Weidenfeller. Dortmund wasn't going to let their special day be ruined though and had their two-goal lead restored just before half-time. Mkhitaryan capped off a swift counter-attack before dinking the ball over Casteels.

Sebastian Kehl was given one last moment in the light of Signal Iduna Park, as he came off before the end. Theodor Gebre Selassie tapped home from a set-piece minutes before the end, but Borussia Dortmund held on to clinch a place in the Europa League with a seventh place finish.

They have one more game of the season to play, in the German Cup final next weekend.

Bayern, Frankfurt and Augsburg end with wins

Whilst the relegation battle was enthralling most fans, teams well clear of the dogfight at the bottom were hoping to end the season with a win to please their already happy fans.

Haris Seferovic opened the scoring in Frankfurt after just three minutes, before Karim Bellarabi equalized almost immediately for travelling Leverkusen. Before half-time, the home side restored their lead through captain Alexander Madlung before half-time.

No goals came in the second half with Frankfurt's Alexander Meier, injured for the end of the season, securing his title as the Bundesliga's top goalscorer

Bayern Munich ended their Bundesliga championship-winning season with a 2-0 win over Mainz at the Allianz Arena. Goals from Robert Lewandowski and Bastian Schweinsteiger either side of half-time sealing their 25th win of the season - a ten point lead over Wolfsburg in second place in the end.

Gladbach was in party mode before the start of the game, a superb show from the home fans highlighted their joy in the Foals' superb season. Raffael gave them a half-time lead, too. Fantastic build-up involving seven players led to Patrick Herrmann's shot at Marwin Hitz falling to the Brazilian, who slotted past the diving goalkeeper.

However, Augsburg wanted to cap their incredible season off too, and did so with three second-half goals. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's stunning strike brought the away side level, before substitutes Tim Matavz and Sascha Mölders sealed the win in the dying minutes.

Augsburg finish the season in fifth, their highest ever finish in the Bundesliga.

Level in Cologne

Wolfsburg and Cologne played out an entertaining draw, with little for either side to play for. Wolfsburg had to come from behind though, as Yuya Osako had the home side ahead inside two minutes. The lead lasted just five minutes for Cologne as Luiz Gustavo fired home inside the box following a corner, before Ivan Perisic gave Wolfsburg the lead inside the first quarter of an hour. A mistake at the back from Dominic Maroh and the Croatian eventually slotted home.

Cologne had an equalizer just after an hour, though. Slawomir Peszko challenged Robin Knoche in the box, with the ball being judged to go in the net off the defender. Wolfsburg finish as second best to champions Bayern and will contest the German Cup final next week, whilst Cologne stay in the Bundesliga after promotion last season, finishing in 12th place.

Results: Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Werder Bremen, Bayern Munich 2-0 Mainz, Eintracht Frankfurt 1-1 Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-3 Augsburg, Cologne 2-2 Wolfsburg
