Bundesliga Matchday 32 roundup
A Bundesliga record was broken in Leverkusen, while Borussia Dortmund's title hopes took a hit after Bayern Munich ground out a home win against Hannover. Mainz and RB Leipzig enjoyed a six-goal classic on Friday night.
Leverkusen 6-1 Frankfurt
Leverkusen picked up a huge win in their quest for a top-four finish against Europa League participants Eintracht Frankfurt. The two clubs set a new Bundesliga record by scoring seven goals between the before half-time, but it was Leverkusen who deservedly emerged victorious with Bosz-ball in full effect, moving them level on points with Frankfurt in fourth.
Freiburg 1-1 Fortuna Düsseldorf
Mid-table dwellers Freiburg and Düsseldorf had nothing left to play for in 2018/19, but still produced an entertaining affair. Vincenzo Grifo's opener from a controversial penalty was cancelled out by Dawid Kownacki's thunderous effort before the break, and while Freiburg were reduced to ten men following Janik Haberer's sending off in the 48th minute, neither side could produce a winner.
Schalke 0-0 Augsburg
With Augsburg's safety guaranteed following Stuttgart's loss in Berlin, Schalke followed suit thanks to a 0-0 draw on home soil against Martin Schmidt's side. Goalkeepers Gregor Kobel and Alexander Nübel both produced vital saves to keep parity, but the encounter was ultimately as forgettable as the scoreline suggests.
Gladbach 2-2 Hoffenheim
A thrilling game between two sides hoping to be in European football next season ended in a draw, the one result that doesn't really help either side. Pavel Kaderabek headed Hoffenheim into the lead before a frantic finale broke out. Matthias Ginter swept home to equalize, Nadiem Amiri volleyed in what looked to be a superb winner but Josip Drmic scored late to share the spoils.
Werder Bremen 2-2 Borussia Dortmund
Dortmund's title hopes suffered a major blow after sharing the spoils with Bremen. The visitors had a 2-0 lead at halftime after goals from Christian Pulisic and Paco Alcacer, but Roman Bürki fumbled a shot from Kevin Möwald before Claudio Pizarro hammered in the equalizer. The result puts Dortmund four points behind Bayern Munich, a deficit no team has ever overcome with two games to play.
Bayern Munich 3-1 Hannover
Niko Kovac's side got the three points they needed in their pursuit of a seventh straight Bundesliga title. Robert Lewandowski and Leon Goretzka put Bayern ahead, but a curious second half saw Jonathas come off the bench, score a penalty after VAR and then get sent off after two quick yellow cards. Franck Ribery added a third to gloss over an okay performance from Bayern.
Hertha Berlin 3-1 Stuttgart
Stuttgart's hopes of avoiding the relegation playoff spot took a blow in the capital as Hertha got their first win since the beginning of March. Vedad Ibisevic and Salomon Kalou scrambled home efforts either side of a strong Ondrej Duda rebound. Mario Gomez got on the scoresheet for Stuttgart, but it was far too late. If Schalke avoid defeat to Augsburg, Stuttgart won't be able to climb the table.
Wolfsburg 2-0 Nuremberg
Wolfsburg kept their European dreams alive at the expense of a Nuremberg side desperate to improve their situation at the other end of the table. A mix-up at the back saw Felix Klaus take advantage and score the opener, before Marcel Tisserand headed in a second later on. The result leaves Wolfsburg within touching distance of fourth place.
Mainz 3-3 RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig may only have had an outside shot at winning the Bundesliga, but those lingering hopes were extinguished as Mainz staged a second half comeback to salvage a deserved point. After two controversial first half goals, Timo Werner made it 3-1 shortly after the restart. But Moussa Niakhate's first goal for Mainz and then a fine late strike by Jean-Philippe Mateta ensured a draw.
