Canada to face Sweden in final

The Canadians beat their North American rivals 1-0 in their semi-final in the men's Olympic ice hockey tournament on Friday. This earned them the right to face Sweden in Sunday's gold-medal game, the last sporting event of the 2014 Sochi Games.

The game turned out to be the tight affair that many pundits had expected, with neither side able to draw first blood in the first period.

However, the Canadians, whose superstar forwards have been having trouble bending the twine throughout this Olympic tournament did manage to get onto the scoreboard early in the second, with Jamie Benn directing the puck past US netminder Jonathan Quick at 1:41 of the period. Jay Boumeester was credited with the assist.

As the second period wore on, the Canadians seemed to gather strength, gradually increasing their edge in shots on goal, however they were unable to add to their slim lead.

The Americans came out in the third determined to even the score, but while they did at times force good saves from the Canadian netminder, Carey Price, they were unable to even the score.

The Canadians now go on to face Sweden in Sunday's final, after the Swedes beat their closest rivals, Finland 2-1 in their semi-final earlier in the day.
