Clooney marries in Venice
September 27, 2014Celebrity personalities joined Clooney and Alamuddin in the luxury Aman hotel overlooking Venice's spectacular Grand Canal for the marriage ceremony on Saturday evening.
Clooney had coolly sipped champagne before gliding up the majestic Grand Canal, waving to hundreds of well-wishers on shore and a flotilla of photographers.
Guests included Cindy Crawford, her husband Randy Gerber, fellow actors Bill Murray and Matt Damon and singer Bono.
Alamuddin, a London-based human rights lawyer, is of Lebanese origin. Her wedding was also being celebrated in her family's Lebanese village of origin, Baakline.
Alamuddin left Lebanon during its civil war and was raised in Britain. She met Clooney, who is active in many political causes, through her work. Clooney has long campaigned for human rights in the Sudanese region.
Married once before
Clooney, 53, has owned a home in northern Italy for years.
He was married once before, to "Mad Men" actress Talia Balsam, but the pair split in 1993 just before his breakout role in "ER" propelled him to the status of global sex symbol.
Alamuddin, 36, and Clooney were engaged in April. They have not publicly divulged details of the weekend-long celebrations.
Last year's Venice Film Festival opened with the space thriller "Gravity," starting Clooney and Sandra Bullock.
