The Rio Games may have been plagued by various forms of controversy, but the hosts put on an impressive closing ceremony.
A celebration of nations
Back in the opening ceremony, athletes took to the Maracana pitch with their fellow compatriots. That wasn't the case in the Maracana during the closing ceremony, as all athletes walked out together as a mark of unity and solidarity.
Germany's flag bearer: Sebastian Brendel
The rower won two gold medals during the games, and was chosen to lead the country's athletes into the closing ceremony.
Colors all over the place
As were the Games, the closing ceremony did not disappoint in terms colors and choreographic efforts, with many Brazilian icons being portrayed in the process.
Time to party!
There was no shortage of patriotism on show in the Maracana, as Rio wrapped up the Games. Many feel it was an opportunity for the country to demonstrate their standing in the world today.

It may have been a wet and blustery night in Rio, but no amount of rain could dampen the spirits of the thousands in attendence at the Maracana.
Over to you, Tokyo
In the final segment of the closing ceremony, Tokyo provided a glimpse of what we can expect from the 2020 Games, to be held in the Japanese capital.
