Police Search Extreme Right Candidate's Office

Police in the German state of Saxony confiscated nearly 800 CDs allegedly containing unconstitutional extremist material Tuesday night. The discs came from the Riesa offices of the "Deutsche Stimme," a newspaper with close connections to the far-right National Democratic Party, whose head, Holger Apfel (NPD), is also running in Saxony's state election this month. According to police reports, the party planned to campaign with the CDs at schools. After the NPD's got four percent of the vote in the western state Saarland's election Sunday, some observers said extremist parties may come to play a role in Saxony and Brandenburg's governments after their Sept. 19 state elections.
