Rio in pictures - Day 3
The winners will always have medals to remind them of their glory. But the strange, emotional and otherwise noteworthy moments at the Olympics are often just as memorable. Here is a selection from the third day in Rio.
A common cause
Australia celebrates a historic triumph, seizing the first women's rugby sevens gold medal after outplaying New Zealand 24-17. The Rio Olympic Games mark the first time in 92 years that any variation of rugby has featured at the Olympics.
Star Wars
No it's not a scene from Star Wars. This is the women's sabre individual round of 16, complete with an impressive light show.
Against all odds
Italy's rising star Paola Ogechi Egonu faces strong opposition during her country's preliminary round volleyball meeting with China. The Chinese proved stronger, securing a convincing 3-0 victory.
The calm before the storm
Indian goalkeeper Sreejesh Parattu stretches out fully-equipped before his match against Germany in the men's field hockey encounter. Record eight-time gold medalists India suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat.
Fully focused
Austria's Stefan Fegerl keeps a steady eye on the ball during his third round table tennis match. He proved to be no match for his opponent, Japanese Koki Niwa, who beat the Austrian 4-1 on Monday.
A passionate warm-up
Judoist Miklos Ungvari of Hungary looks confident ahead of his quarter-final bout against Azerbaijan's Rustam Orujov in the men's -73kg category. Ungvari's rival turned out to be resistant to the Hungarian's frightening grimace and he was eliminated from the Olympic tournament.
Boundless joy
A fun moment: Mathlynn Sasser of the Marshall Islands celebrates her weightlifting performance during the women's 58kg competition. Sasser finished in 11th place.
A flag gaffe
The wrong Chinese flag is carried into the Olympic Stadium during the opening ceremony, with all five stars being parallel with each other. The correct variant features one large star, with four smaller stars rotated to Point toward the larger one. China's government officially expressed their fury.
An artistic performance
Japan's Kohei Uchimura excels on the floor during the men's artistic gymnastics final. Japan claimed their first gold medal since 2004 while ending China's reign as team Champions. Great Britain passed up a late opportunity to get on the medal table.
