Training camps in the lawless nation of Somalia are attracting hundreds of foreigners, including Americans, and Somalis recruited by a local insurgent group linked to al-Qaida, according to local and U.S. officials. Onlookers are teargassed by police trying to disperse idlers who had milled around a prestigious shopping mall on September 24, 2013 in Nairobi, which is the scene of a siege by Somali islamists now on its fourth day. Security forces are defusing explosive devices set up by the jihadists inside the still ongoing shopping mall siege, where extremists claim to be still holding hostages, police said on Septenber 24. Sporadic gunfire broke out again at dawn, hours after Kenyan forces had claimed to have wrested back control of the building from the fundamentalists who are said to include American nationals and a Brtitish woman. Armed Kenyan policemen take cover outside the Westgate mall in Nairobi on September 23, 2013. Kenyan troops were locked in a fierce firefight with Somali militants inside an upmarket Nairobi shopping mall on September 22 in a final push to end a siege that has left at least 69 dead and 200 wounded with an unknown number of hostages still being held. Somalia's Al Qaeda-inspired Shebab rebels said the carnage at the part Israeli-owned complex mall was in retaliation for Kenya's military intervention in Somalia, where African Union troops are battling the Islamists.
