Unknown men gesture and celebrate as they try to burn a flag outside the Muslim Brotherhood heaquarter after unkown attackers ransacked it and tried to set it on fire on December 6, 2012 in Cairo. Egyptian protesters set fire to the Muslim Brotherhood's main headquarters in Cairo on Thursday after storming the large villa, a spokesman for Islamist movement told AFP. 'Two hundred thugs went to the headquarters. Security tried to prevent them, but some got through the back door, ransacked it and set it on fire. It is still burning now,' Brotherhood spokesman Mahmud Ghozlan said. A security official said the fire was limited and police had pushed the protesters away from the seat of the Islamist movement which backed Mohamed Morsi for the presidency. The protest came as the president gave a televised address to the nation in which said he would not tolerate killings or sabotage but would respect free speech. The assembly retained today the principles of Islamic law as the main source of law, as it rushed through the approval process over objections from an opposition that argues more time is needed. It also agreed a clause stating that the principles of Christian and Jewish legal traditions would guide the personal and religious affairs of people belonging to those faiths. The vote comes amid accusations that the Islamist-dominated panel is railroading the charter through and protests over President Mohamed Morsi's assumption of sweeping powers, which has plunged the country into its worse crisis since Morsi took office in June. The project is primarily a economic and social programme comprising of promises the president vowed to fulfil within 100 days of taking office. Mursi has won grudging respect from detractors in his first 100 days by sending the army back to barracks faster than anyone expected and raising Egypt's international profile in several newsmaking visits abroad. Yet his political fortunes and those of the Muslim Brotherhood which propelled him to power may well depend on his delivering on more mundane issues such as easing traffic congestion and bread and fuel shortages by Oct. 7 as promised.
